Feel – Timing – Balance

„Wahre Einheit – Eine gewollte Kommunikation zwischen Pferd und Mensch, True Unity – Willing Communication Between Horse And Human“ Buch von Tom Dorrance ( * 11.Mai 1910,  + 11. Juni 2003)

„Echtes Horsemanship durch Gefühl – True Horsemanship Through Feel“ Buch von Bill Dorrance ( * 19. Januar 1906, + 20. Juli 1999) Co Autorin Leslie Desmond

„Denke Harmonie mit Pferden – Think Harmony with Horses“ Buch von Ray Hunt ( * 31. August 1929, + 12.

Horsemanship - History and Foundation

The founders of what is known as Horsemanship today, are the brothers Tom and Bill Dorrance and Ray Hunt. Horsemanship is not a training method. It is an attitude in working with horses. An assistance. It can help looking at a horse from the horses perspective. If it is possible for a human to see a horse from its point of view, this opens a total new horizon in the work with horses. A kind of communication which enables the horse to understand common challenges in the daily work. Respect for the horse, its nature, its sensitivities. Reaching for unity, harmony and a feel based communication between horse and human are the intentions of true horsemanship. The basics for this are knowledge, understanding and feel. This is reflected in the fundamentals of horsemanship

Feel – Timing – Balance

„True Unity – Willing Communication Between Horse And Human“ book by Tom Dorrance ( * May, 11, 1910 + June, 11, 2003)

„True Horsemanship Through Feel“ book by Bill Dorrance ( + January, 19, 1906 + July, 20, 1999) co author Leslie Desmond

„Think Harmony with Horses“ book by Ray Hunt ( + August, 31, 1929 + March, 12, 2009)

These three books are written by the founders of this art of handling horses. They are building a foundation and are a help to understand what we call ‚Horsemanship‘. The link behind the bookcovers (as shown below) are guiding to the website of Tom Dorrance. There you can order these books. The german translation of the book by Ray Hunt you can find on the internet with the given ISBN number.

Ray Hunt was a student of Tom Dorrance. A horse named Hondo was the reason for their first meeting. He opened horsemanship to the public in the 1970s by travelling the US and Australia. Giving clinics, together with Tom Dorrance, they showed the public how easy things with horses can be, if humans take into consideration the horses point of view. Buck Brannaman, a student of Ray Hunt, is teaching these skills in the direct follow of these horsemen.

The tools are rope halters, ropes with a length of 6 to 7 meters without metal carabines and a so called flag. The flag is a piece of fabric or plastic, placed on the end of a 1,5 meter stick. Lassos are often as well part of the work tools. For the riding part snaffle bits, the classic hackamore (bosal, hanger, mecate) and californio style bits are in use.

More than once the try was made to take over the term ‚Horsemanship‘. Organisations or individuals tried to found their own training method by using this term. And it is still done. There is small accordance with the idea and the founders of horsemanship. Games, exaggerated dominance, timeless repeated lections or esoteric … all these things can not be found in the books nor in the philosophie of horsemanship. Reaching for unity, harmony and a feel based communication between horse and human are the intentions of true horsemanship.
